1BCA5 - Communicative English Objective

This course is designed on a predominantly communicative or interactive approach to learning of English. This approach is based on the belief that language in not a body of knowledge to be learnt but a skill to be acquired. Student acquires the ability to use the language fluently effectively, correctly, confidently and naturally in real life situations that is to say, they imbibe and internalize the language. However the approach is to encourage the learners to formulate and express their ideas and offer ample scope for creativity. The approach has been aimed at an integrator development of the four basic skills - Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

COMPREHENSION

Comprehension includes understanding the language by reading and listening for that some interesting current passages of poems will be given  of the students individually or in groups and they are allowed to read in the class by giving sufficient time. Than the comprehension will be tested checked by formulations various questionnaire in different ways such as Objective type, fill in the blanks or small answered questions similarly the passages or poems will be read out in the class and the question shall be asked verbally to evaluate level of comprehension. This would be to enhance their listening capability.

WRITING SKILLS
 
In this section the students will be exposed to various techniques of writing such as Paragraph , Report , Composition , Diary entry, Application and letters . In this count temporary Indian writing on culturally familiar topics and would promote inferential and analytical learning apart from literary application.

FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR

The grammar will be taught in a functional, integrated and informal way giving stress more on the usage rather that defining them. Maximum possible exercises  will be given.

Structural Items :

• Simple compound and complex sentences.
• Co-ordinate clause(with,but or either-or, Neither-Nor otherwise, or else)
• Subordinate clauses-noun clauses-as subject object and complement : Relative clauses(restrictive and non-resctictive clauses). Adverb clauses(open and hypothetical, conditional, with because, though here, so that as long as, as soon as)
• Comparative Clauses(as += adjective/adverb+ as-no sooner than

Tenses :

• Simple present, progressive and present perfect
• Simple past, progressive and past perfect.
• Indication of Futurity
• The passive (Sample present and past, present and past perfect and 'to' infinitive structure)
• Reported Speech: (i) Declarative sentences,(ii) Imperatives (iii)Interrogatives - wh- questions. Yes/No Questions, Exclamation sentences, Models (will, shall, should, would, ought to, have to/ have got to, can ,could, me-might and need)
• Verb structures (infinitives and gerundials)
• Linking devices

LITERATURE

The teaching approach would provide opportunities for whole hearted, whole class participation through pair-work and group discussion. Various activities like extempore, debate, vocabulary games will be performed in the class room where each and every student participation is essential.
